Traditional sesshin with zen teacher Karen Terzano at Freizeitenheim Raven nearby Hamburg

Karen Terzano (born 1950) is an American Zen Buddhist teacher in the Ordinary Mind School tradition, founded by Charlotte Joko Beck. Karen began Zen practice in the late 1980s, studying for several years during the 1990s with Hwalson Sunim, a teacher within the Chogye Order of Korea, a Lin-chi (Rinzai) form of Zen. In 1998 she moved to Costa Rica and became a formal student of Sunyana Graef, a Dharma Heir of Phillip Kapleau. In 2005 Karen returned to the United States where she spent 2 years in residence at the Vermont Zen Center before leaving on what she calls her, ‘Walkabout’ period, a series of solitary wilderness pilgrimages. In 2009 Karen retook her formal vows with her current teacher, Barry Magid of the Ordinary Mind School, and received Denkai from him in 2011. Karen received full teacher rights in a Denbo ceremony at New York in 2014.

Karen will lead this traditional sesshin at the Raven Freizeitenheim, which is not far from Lüneburg. Sesshin is a period of intensive meditation, that is practised  similarly in zen centres all over the world. Sesshin literally means "to gather the mind". It is a chance to spend time with oneself and others in silence. If you are curious, the schedule will probably look something like this. Once a day there is the opportunity for a one-to-one talk with Karen. If you do not already have a regular meditative practice and have any questions please feel free to contact me or Karen (karenterzano[at]gmail.com).

The Freizeitenheim is a former primary school and is simply equipped (https://www.freizeitenheim.de/). We sleep in bunk beds in shared rooms with up to 6 people. You have to bring your own bed linen. We recommend full-time participation, but part-time participation for example at the weekend only is possible. Please contact me about that if you need more information.

The Freizeitenheim can be reached by public transport. If you are travelling by car, please let us know if you can give someone a lift. If you need help, please get in touch.

The sesshin costs 196€ (180€ for members of Tavallinen Mieli (Ordinary Mind Finnland), 156€ in case of financial shortage). If 156€ is too much, please contact me to find a solution. Financial reasons should never exclude someone from participation in sesshin. The fee includes accommodation and all meals. We will prepare simple, vegetarian food. Karen will not be paid for her work. However, there will be the possibility of a donation for her. Karen only speaks English, some translation into German is possible if required. For all questions please contact me. Please register here.
